Celebrating Mid-Autumn Festival...

Posted by Bookazine Blogger on

Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Mooncake Festival, is a cherished event in the Chinese cultural calendar. Celebrated on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month, this festival embodies the spirit of family reunions, gratitude to the moon, and the joy of harvest. In 2025, the Mid-Autumn Festival will take place on October 6th. Join us as we explore the origins, traditions, and ways to celebrate this enchanting festival in Hong Kong.

Origins of the Mid-Autumn Festival
The festival’s beginnings are steeped in folklore, with the tale of Hou Yi and Chang’e being the most renowned. According to this legend, Hou Yi, the archer, shot down nine suns to save the earth from scorching heat. As a reward, he received an elixir of immortality. However, his wife Chang’e consumed the elixir to protect it from a thief, ascending to the moon to become the Moon Goddess alongside the Jade Rabbit. Today, moon gazers attempt to catch glimpses of Chang’e and the rabbit in the moon's shadows, enriching the festival’s magical ambiance.

Traditional Celebrations in Hong Kong

  1. Family Gatherings: The full moon symbolizes reunion, making the Mid-Autumn Festival an ideal time for families to come together. They celebrate with festive meals that include delectable mooncakes, glutinous rice balls, and seasonal fruits.
  2. Moon Gazing: Admiring the full moon is a beloved tradition. Families gather in parks and open areas to bask in its light, sharing stories and poetry. Some of the best spots for moon gazing in Hong Kong are Sun Yat Sen Memorial Park, Victoria Park, and West Kowloon Art Park.
  3. Lanterns: Lantern carrying is a cherished custom, with children often making and decorating their own.
  4. Lantern Riddles: A playful aspect of the festival involves solving riddles on slips of paper attached to lanterns. These riddles typically convey auspicious messages, making for a fun and interactive experience for all ages.
